Alcohols can be considered derivatives of water (H2O; also written as HOH). Consider the graph below, here our simplified relationships Henrys law and Raouls law can be applied over the range A-B and C-D respectively, however they break down in the middle where non-ideal behaviour is encountered, B-C. To adequately estimate the properties of mixtures over a wide range of conditions a more accurate approach is required. Volatility of b = pb / xb. Its presence on each plate of the rectification column alters the relative volatility of the close boiling compounds in a direction to make the separation on each plate greater and thus require either fewer plates to effect the same separation or make possible a greater degree of separation with the same number of plates. Less hydrogen bonding is expected between molecules of a volatile liquid compared with other less volatile liquids. Hydrogen bonding greatly increases the boiling points of alcohols compared to hydrocarbons of comparable molar mass. The separation was effected by using a suitable amine as an extractive distillation solvent. stream When their liquid concentrations are equal, more volatile components have higher vapor pressures than less volatile components.
